Shainna: “Wish” and The State of Music

Ok guys, I can truly say that the state of music is starting to move in a positive direction. I say that because recently there are some new artist that are starting to come to light. Slowly but surely a lot of new talent within the music industry are getting there shine. Jive Records recently, within the last couple months, signed Baltimore native Wish. Baltimore…is definitely in the building. Wish has a style all her own, and the voice to match. She recently released her debut single Suga Daddy. It’s a fun rendition; with a nostalgic Motown records feel. I’m for real. The song makes you want to get three of your friends, and get dressed up like Diana Ross and the Supremes. Wigs and all, and get to singing. You know, you will be Wish singing, and then you have your back up singers. Ahh.. Yes, good times.

Now on to Wish as an artist! Because of the wonderful invention that is You Tube, I read up on Ms. Wish and this is what I got. She hails from Baltimore, Maryland, and found her passion in singing, like a lot of other female artist…singing in church. From there she clearly wanted to work on her craft. She entered in as many local talent shows as she could. She truly enjoyed being in front of a crowd.

She moved to New York on 2005 in order to continue to build her budding musical career. Don’t get in twisted, Wish is a woman with a plan. Upon her move she not only wanted to sing, but she was working as a lingerie designer. But she didn’t waste any time when she hit NY. She and her crew produced her studio album Skool Gurl Diaries “which infused Wish’s retro style, raspy alto and urban creativity to produce hits such as H.A.T.E.L.O.V.E., Jumpoff and her rendition of the Deniece Williams classic Silly, the 2009 edition… The album is a memorable compilation of mesmerizing melodies, intense harmonies and vivid vocals. It is a collection of relatable short stories that Wish is telling to her audience in a way that is as relevant as they are poignant. Loosely based on the "School Girl" mantra, each character Wish portrays in her album has her own story to tell. Having experienced herself the difficulties of being a young adolescent in Baltimore, Wish speaks to those who find it difficult to interpret and express their feelings. ”
According to her MySpace 2010, Wish has dropped her sophomore album, making certain to show her versatility. But making sure not to be placed in a box. Wish wants the industry and the world to know that there is not mold. She is her own genre and is working to keep it that way.

She’s a different type of female, and I’m kind of excited to see what she brings to the table. You guys know I love anything that is different and funky (in a good way). From her haircut and color, to her fashion, Wish has definitely caught my attention.
