Losing a car to theft is a costly thing to happen, especially if the car insurance policy will not cover the loss. There are quite ways on preventing car theft that can lessen the chances of it happening, and most of these are just common sense put into practice.
The first common sense tip in ways on preventing car theft is one most people would consider obvious, but apparently it is not obvious to everyone. Of course, there are those that ignore the obvious, too. That first tip is to never, ever leave the keys in the car’s ignition. This should not be done even at home in the driveway, much less at the store or a friend’s house. Along this same train of thought, never leave the engine running and get out of the car for any reason whatsoever. This is just asking for trouble, practically inviting someone to steal the car.
- Do not ever leave valuables in plain sight on the seats or dashboard of the car. Items such as purses, cameras, laptops, cell phones and so forth are more than enough reason for a thief to break windows in order to steal them and possibly the car as well. Take such things out of the car or lock them out of sight under a seat or in the car’s trunk.
- It is a good idea to always lock the car when leaving it. This holds true even errands that only take a few minutes. A few minutes are all it takes to have the car stolen, especially if it is easy to get into. When at home, in the driveway, lock the car before going inside the house. Locking the car may not stop a thief, but it will at least slow them down and give people a chance to notice or make him change his mind. Locking is an easy one when it comes to ways on preventing car theft.
- When parking, pick well-lighted areas where there is traffic nearby. This heightens the chance that a would-be thief will be seen and either caught or scared off before stealing the car.
- Lastly, never hide a second set of car keys anywhere on the body of the car. Thieves are aware of all the hiding places and know how to look quickly to find the keys. Once they find a second set of keys, stealing the car becomes an easy feat.
Anti-theft devices are ways on preventing car theft, as long as they are purchased and put to correct use. Those devices are items such as car alarms, steering wheel locks, fuel kill switches and glass sensors that alert the owner as to when the glass windows on the car are broken; just to name a few anti-theft options. Perhaps the ultimate in anti-theft devices is the Lojack device. This enables police to track stolen cars and hopefully return them to their rightful owners. Oftentimes, thieves have no idea a Lojack device is in place.
Thanks for the tips! What people should also have aside from the safety measures is to have common sense. It would really greatly help them prevent any theft of their valuables or cars. I’ll bet that with common sense and all of the tips mentioned above, the rate for car theft will go down.
