Have you ever been so engrossed by the history of a people, a land? So taken by the shear hospitality of its people and culture. I got into a taxi cab once and never forgot it. It wasn’t the destination that would forever be engrained in my mind but the journey itself. I never spent so long in a cab ever in my life, If I had a pillow and comfy pajamas , I could have spun around in that surprisingly spacious Toyota caravan all night long. I toured the island, like no other person has done before, with an up close and personal rendition of life on the Island of St Kitts.
I don’t think I was really touring, more mingling and experiencing the culture of the beautiful and somewhat abandoned land mass. I say abandoned, not to mean deserted but left unattended, like so many other islands, which pawns its beauty to cover its unrest and financial woes. St Kitts is beautiful; there are no other words to describe it. Yes, it is a bit too rural for some and has its occasional touristy feel. No worries, if you’re able to hop a ride with Ed Johnson and his magic carpet, you’re good to go. He is trying desperately to make a living while he’s still able to walk and talk. Like many on the island. First off, you will need a place to stay, unless you have the convenience of being on a cruise with St Kitts as one of your ports of call.
I would recommend choosing a cruise which allows you at least 1 to 2 days on at least one of the islands. No one wants to run around each island like contestants on the Amazing race. There are a number of places which are In the pricy range, if you have the funds, why not, but don’t get to caught up in the tourist lair. You want the real deal. If you want to know whether or not the hotel is directly on beach or within 28 miles walking distance, after you hitch a ride, go find out from trip advisor. The reason I like this site, is because I like the reviews and feedback from real happy or discontented travelers. St. Kitts Marriott Resort & the Royal Beach Casino in Frigate Bay has at least over 80% who believe this place is a worthwhile stay. The rest, well that’s what I usually read is the bad reviews, If you had the opportunity to visit St Kitts and you come back with a vengeful deep seeded hatred in your soul, it’s usually for a reason.
The disgruntled angst may be petty to some as they are elated to be anywhere but home and unkempt floors are ignored like sand between their toes because once again there not at home. Do you homework on which hotel best fits your needs and always have a backup plan, you don’t have to stay in a bed bug infested slum, check out and go to backup plan B. If you want romantic, peace and quiet, don’t go staying at the resort with 10 thousand activities geared to young adults. They have that too at Disney World, and unless you go into a deep trance when meeting Mickey, there will be no other moments of silence.
There are a few cheaper hotels under $90 per night which include Frigate Bays Timothy Beach Resort and Frigate Bay Resort, in Basseterre, Depending of course on what time of year. If the hotels website doesn’t have pictures of the rooms or an aerial view of the hotel so your able to see the exact location in proximity to the local prison or not– then don’t book it. Go on Google Maps and get a satellite view. There are many options besides hotels. Many people have rentals and vacation homes or timeshares, look into it.
