Americans in general consume more food than they have in the past.
This is the case for all races.Food is more assessable and there are so many different types of food that can satisfy any palette. It uses to be that only the rich could afford a moderate amount of food.
The poor who also included the middle class could hardly afford to eat. There were no dollar menus or weekly discounts.
Come to think of it there were no preservatives either. We are now able to eat a lot more food for a lot less. Now, understand a lot more doesn’t exactly mean a lot more quality foods. The good or edible stuff is becoming more unaffordable each year.
Statistics show that up to 65% of Americans are overweight or obese. 60% of African American males and 78% of African American women are overweight. 28.8% of the males and 50.8% of the women were obese. All statistics include Hispanics and non Hispanics.
What are some cultural reasons why African Americans are overweight? Social and cultural reasons are often overlooked especially by many doctors. Then there are other factors such as environment and heredity.
Many African Americans are content with larger body sizes. Most African Americans prefer a person who is slightly overweight to slightly underweight and prefer larger bottoms and larger chest sizes for either male or female. They also feel less guilty for over eating.
