The Rosewood Massacre

Rosewood Case, one of the worst race riots in American history, in which hundreds of angry whites killed an undetermined number of blacks and burnt down their Florida community.

In 1922 Rosewood, Florida, was a small, predominantly black town. During the winter of 1922, two events in the vicinity of Rosewood aggravated local race relations: the murder of a white schoolteacher in nearby Perry, which led to the murder of three blacks, and a Ku Klux Klan rally in Gainesville on New Year’s Eve.

On New Year’s Day of 1923, Fannie Taylor, a young white woman living in Sumner, claimed that a black man sexually assaulted her in her home. A small group of whites began searching for a recently escaped black convict named Jesse Hunter, whom they believed to be responsible. They incarcerated one suspected accomplice, Aaron Carrier, and lynched another, Sam Carter.

The men then targeted Aaron’s cousin Sylvester Carrier, a fur trapper and private music instructor, who was rumored to be harboring Jesse Hunter.A group of 20 to 30 white men went to Sylvester Carrier’s house to confront him. They shot his dog, and when his mother, Sarah, stepped outside to talk with the men, they shot her.

Sylvester killed two men and wounded four in the shoot-out that ensued. After the men left, the women and children, who prior to this had gathered in Carrier’s house for protection, fled to the swamp where the majority of Rosewood’s residents had already sought refuge.

The white men returned to Carrier’s house the following evening. After a brief shoot-out, they entered the house, found the bodies of Sarah Carrier and a black man whom they believed to be Sylvester Carrier, and set the residence on fire.

The men then proceeded to rampage through Rosewood, torching other buildings and slaughtering animals. They were joined by a mob of about 200 whites who converged on Rosewood after finding out that a black man had killed two whites. That night two local white train conductors, John and William Bryce, who knew all of Rosewood’s residents, picked up the black women and children and took them to Gainesville. John Wright, a white general store owner who hid a number of black women and children in his home during the riot, planned and helped carry out this evacuation effort. The African Americans who escaped by foot headed for Gainesville or for other cities in the northern United States.

By the end of the weekend all of Rosewood was leveled except for the Wright house and the general store. Although the state of Florida claimed that only eight people died in the Rosewood riot—two whites and six blacks—testimonies by survivors suggest that more African Americans perished. No one was charged with the Rosewood murders. After the riot, the town was deserted and even blacks living in surrounding communities moved out of the area.

It is unclear what became of Jesse Hunter. Residents of nearby Cedar Key claimed that he was captured and killed after the massacre. The descendants of the Carrier family contend that Jesse Hunter was not the man who had attacked Taylor. Philomena Carrier, who had been working with her grandmother Sarah Carrier at Fannie Taylor’s house at the time of the alleged sexual assault, claimed that the man responsible was a white railroad engineer. She says that the man had come to see Taylor the morning of January 1 after her husband left for work. After an argument erupted between Taylor and the man, Philomena witnessed the man exit the back door and jog down the road toward Rosewood.

The Carriers’ descendants maintain that the man was a Mason and that he persuaded Aaron Carrier, a member of Rosewood’s black Masonic lodge, to help him escape by appealing to the society’s code requiring members to help one another regardless of race. Carrier in turn persuaded another black Mason, Sam Carter—one of the few men in Rosewood with a wagon—to pick up the white man at Carrier’s house and drop him off in the swamp. From there the man disappeared without a trace.

Although the Rosewood riot received national coverage in the New York Times and the Washington Post as it unfolded, it was neglected by historians. Survivors of Rosewood did not come forward to tell their story because of the shame they felt for having been connected with the riot. They also kept silent out of fear of being persecuted or killed. In 1993 the Florida Department of Law Enforcement conducted an investigation into the case, and this led to the drafting of a bill to compensate the survivors of the massacre.

After an extended debate and several hearings, the Rosewood Bill, which awarded $150,000 to each of the riot’s nine eligible black survivors, was passed in April 1994. In spite of the state’s financial compensation, the survivors remained frightened. When asked if he would go back to Rosewood, survivor Wilson Hall said, “No, … They still don’t want me down there.”

It is about time that America (United States of America) pay reperation to the descendents of slavery. Payments should be made in grants for a free college education for all qualified slave descendent.

Silently, America is helping the blackman destroy themselfs through drugs and incarseration. America need to spend more in education than in the private jail systems that are currently operating for profit.

it was africa that started the slave trade and it is africa that still keeps it going, only with little children!!!! this is a fact. money wont fix a thing.

      • NorthsideRasta says:

Excuse me but slavery still exists worldwide & EurAsians,Europeans,Asians, & others still have enslaved children. What about slavery in east Europe & south Asia, Australia, & the pacific ocean islands? There are too many libraries in buildings & the net where information can be found about the long history of slavery on earth. Saying Africans started slavery is a convenient
way to heap the blame for this illness on one continent.

        • Napoleon Solo-2 says:

Bravo!! How well spoken and thought out… But the form of slavery you speak of is a diffeant form on a differant level..For the most part not what African Americans are expressing and talking about… Sence when have you seen Asian prostitutes toating a bail of cotton under a masters whip in public, building in the hot sun, familly members raped etc.. etc.. case in point.. I guess that leaves very little time for sex tradeing and prostitution slavery in the face of building a Confederate nation..The last I checked No war has been fought to set the hookers free… They ain’t in shackles today Daddy-O !!!

          • Marc Atkins says:

Why are Black people in America so quick to determine that the slavery you see today is so “different” from the slavery in Black America? How do you know it is? It took a lot of effort over generations for us to get the picture of slavery that we have today. “Roots” was televised decades ago and we are still discovering fresh horrors. How long did people think that Black slaves in the south sang “Zipadee Doo Da”? Let’s not assume anything.

      • L. Nathan Hare says:

Repeatedly, I herar and read comments from individuals asserting that since some African people were involed in the slave trade, and that slavery still exists in many places, reparations to the sons and daughters of American mass enslavement and degredation of African people is unwarranted.
That’s like saying that since stealing, lying, murder, graft, bribery and all, still go on in the world, we should not demand retribution from trhe perpetrators in consequence for these crimes.
The issue of whether Caucasian Americans today should participate in paymeny for crimes committed by their ancestors yesterday is also specious. If your greatgrandfather’s land was stolen by someone, and now the thief’s children are inhabiting and benefiting from the proceeds of the theft, reparations are still owed to the victim’s family from those who received shares of the stolen goods.
Even in a place like America, this value framework still holds true.

            L. Nathan Hare.. I do agree with your statement..I wish that i could recieve reperations for crimes of that nature..I’ve been a victim of violent racism several times and so have some of my ancestores.. despite the fact that i am 1/8th white (Irish) on my mothers side..God only knows how much has been taken away as well cheated out of in our past…

      • Doreathea says:

Oh wow.. Africa did not start the slave trade. Slavery has been a part of all society since biblical times. African’s, just like other groups of people had slavery and their own way of doing things. Some societies even allowed their slaves to go free or intermingle and marry into the tribes.
Slavery in America was took slavery to another level. People and an entire culture were destroyed… families were permanently separated, never to be seen again, and that doesn’t even begin to name the horrors of slavery in America. Look around. Almost every nation in the world has managed to retain their heritage, language and traditions except for people of African descent. And thanks to the KKK, Jim crow laws and government sanctioned racism, African Americans still suffer the affects of slavery. Drugs, prison, lack of education and even the ignorancy of some African Americans who seem to think that being educated is “acting white” have all contributed to the “New Slavery” of African American’s. Now if anyone can show me where other slave societies have contributed to so much devastation of a nation to the point that the descendants STILL haven’t been able to rise above it, you let me know. Peace

        • Teri says:

I watched the movie even though, I have a hard time watching any show that shows cruelty and injustice. I think slavery is a terrible thing and feel that the US is the only place where people still argue about it. There has been slavery in almost every civilization since biblical times, and slaves come in every color. People are cruel and when they have more wealth than others they think that it entitles them to do pretty much anything they want. If everyone is entitled to reparation, then this country better start with the Indians. I don’t believe that this country has caused African Americans to become drug addicts or inmates. Taking drugs or selling drugs is a choice. We all make choices in life, whether the choices are right or wrong, it’s still a choice.

          • Mrs. Rutherford says:

shut up u %*$%&^&! African Americans and Indians should get paid back for everything. Our whole civilization and culture has been taken away from us. There would be nothing in America without any of us u f%^*%&^*%* go get a life. Look at my last name $%$ its a white slave owners name its not from my african or indian roots so go %^&%&%.

First of all whether people want to admit it or not there will always be racist people on this planet I work with tons of them and now a days people aren’t afraid to make lol racist add comments because only certain people are held accountable for their actions when there are other races who get away with their racial remarks. And I’m tired of people talkin shit about African Americans we deserve a lot more respect as well as other things that we don’t receive if it wasn’t for the African American brilliance and talent and skill the shit that people in there every day life wouldn’t even exist. Think about that before you start running your fuckin mouth we have been through a lot as a people in whole and we as African Americans provided the united states with basic essentials the very people who spit in our faces and call us niggers in don’t act like they don’t because they do.

Us German Americans should also get reparation payments for the discrimination we suffered during both World Wars.

      • Napoleon Solo-2 says:

Not really..Why..?? Most of you people allways started wars of race and relligion..The Hetions fought against the colonist as mercenaries,The 1st WW. they wanted to be an empire, the second world war most followed an antichrist known as Hitler and killed many jews and then some in order to rule the world..What the Germans are and did is a reflection of what America is all about. I failed to mention..the sacking of the britsin anceint history..English are mixed with German blood…So how can you get back reperations from a thief when the thief is within yourself???

      • S.L.Underwood says:

Not really. Hmmm,Let’s see…Your people(hetian soldiers) fought against the colonist in the revolutionary war for the British,WW1 wanted breathing space to become an empire,WW2-Followed an antichrist and killed Gods chosen people whom He has a covanent with…The English are an off shoot of the Germans from the sacking of the british isles in anceint times..The thief is within yourselves..Get it from the Germans..I guess the world is not enough for you..America is the reflection and product of your peoples need to dominate and be superior as well as worshipped…

      • Natalie says:

I understand where you’re coming from, but really, it’s not nearly as bad as what the African Americans have suffered. It’s true that no one deserves to be discriminated against, but it is the descendants of slaves who were targeted by Jim Crow, who were denied their right to vote, and so forth. Let’s be reasonable please.

  6. lorraine says:

i also beleive the blood of many americans shed in the name of freedom of slavery, how do you measure that to money???? i agree with the guy who said why should the people of america have to keep defending ourselves against all that happened before our time. i dont like what happened, i dont even have any famlily that ever owned a slave. we came here on a boat, but willingly i know. i am sorry for what has happened. but i cant do anything about it. i wish all decendants well.

    • Mister B says:

No you can’t but their is so many other who can and want because there is still hate in their heart, I can take what your and I will kill you if you do mind and kill mind if she do you

  7. Mister B says:

We can kill people in other country and their children can get paid and compensaited for it but only african american is looking for a hand out it just ashame how other race can ask to be given but us oh no they already have to much people don’t see other getting something until it effect them and now give us what we need

    • grey eyed girl says:

how the fck is it a handout when these people LOST everything they owned;as well as loved ones? you are just like your stankin arse ancestors; stupid racist and downright evil.

  8. Mr. Pister says:

If these victims were compensated for the acts that took place in Rosewood, then maybe white victims who suffer murder and worse at the hands of african american gangs should be compensated as well.

    • Martini says:

Rosewood is one of millions of stories that can be told of abuse. This land was built from the blood and sweat Indians,Asians, and or course black but we are still getting raped now. Jewish people got paid and people act like their pain just stopped. We haven’t got anything and no one wants us to talk about it.

      • eddie says:

really Jews got paid. You are sadly and seriously mistaken pal. my whole family was wiped out in an instant and nobody gave me jack. and if your talking Germany the few pennies they gave out was a small amount compared to how much they took. my dad got a couple of thousand dollars ( 2-3,000 ) and he had his farm, property, and not to mention his health and family taken away for ever. some compensation. ask a Jew if you want to know the real story.

        • eddie says:

Blacks never suffered like the Jews. not even close, to say so is just plain ignorant.

          • grey eyed girl says:

Oh yes Blacks have, only 6 million Jews died. Compare that to 100 MILLION AFRICANS THAT DIED DURING THE SLAVE TRADE. You want Blacks to forget slavery yet want the world to be reminded of the Holocaust. Jews are no better than anyone else. Besides Jews were chosen because they were IGNORANT of the Messiah; not because they were ‘special’. Trust they are not. You imbeciles will die just as anyone else here on earth, so get the fck off your soapbox!

            • cherri says:

              I agree

            • Napoleon Solo-2 says:

Correction: The jews weren’t ignorant of the Messiah..They just flat out rejected HIM as the true Messiah.. But you make a good point as does Cherri..

            • Natalie says:

Excuse me, but it’s downright sad to see racist comments on an article about how bad racism is. “The Jews were chosen because they were ignorant of the Messiah”??? Does that somehow justify what happened to them? That shouldn’t have happened at all.

          • cherri says:

I believe that the problem here is that people lost their lives by the hands of someone seeming superior but really isn’t. I don’t think that u should worry about the numbers as much as the fact we were all treated unjust. U don’t sound any more better than the rest with a cold hearted response like that

    • Lady T says:

It is a well-known fact, most often the victims of gang violence are the people in their own families and neighborhoods. Do you read the papers?

    • james taylor says:

not the same thing, and if u think so thats sad .

    • grey eyed girl says:

and african americans should be also compensated for being victims of murder, robbery, rape, theft and other crimes that are committed at the hands of white gangs also. before you act stupid and say what white gangs? oh you know. aryans, neo nazis, racist out bikers and others. you whiteys are not innocent! not by a long shot.

      • ursula says:

i am a whitey, and i agree , a country that prides it self on saying , the land of the free, that is hogwash, as american history speaks a different story. but intitlement for the great great grandchildren of the victims, is not right either, because as a decendent you have not brought anything to the table to claim pain and suffering, just because a familymember 100 years ago ,you cant even relate to, was victimized. then every member of this earth should be intitled to monetary reward, because mankind left a legacy of injustice, and all of us are guilty, and as then and now, we just look the other way and hope ill go away. maybe if we teach and finaly tell the truth to our children, what not to do, maybe, maybe ,this world would not hate, but you know, i dont think so,we have not learnt our lesson ever.

  9. tammy says:

I just. Wonder if whites was massacre like the blacks was in rosewood what would the story be today and why do whites fear the blacks so bad is it because blacks have ideas and dreams and thought how to put things in to action. The whites have always done wrong to blacks and to jews and anything or any person that not white but they don’t mind sleeping with our black women the people in rosewood should still be getting paid

    • Cynthia says:

True Rosewood is just one of the millions of stories that have been documented, yet what about the thousands that have not been told. I wonder what would have happen if it was just the opposite, or is there need to wonder, when reflecting to Rosewood and many of the other historical incidents one could only imagine.

Allegedly, Whites men feared for their women and children, when actually they were the ones rapping Black women and children for pleasure. Often, the women would not tell their husbands, nor would children tell their parents, for fear that Black men would be killed, or lose their jobs, which was the only means to provide life necessities for their family. I believed that the guilt from White men actions toward Black women, complied with the large amounts of alcohol they consumed, created their fearful and horrible images of Blacks in their minds.

Historically, reflecting on all the wrong and ill that Whites perpetuated unto Blacks, have never been challenged, or contested, still does not justify the gang related killing upon Whites today. However, can a connection bee seen was it right then, to have no peace, no resolution, and no legal justice for so many people, so many families, for so many years? Is one family any better or worse than another, when love ones are killed by anyone Black or White, should not peace be brought to families through justice? Okay I guess it is just- us, who is the us? Yes, many of the principles of slavery are still here under disguise of modernization and yes, the sheets are definitely uniforms and suits.

  10. david westmoreland says:

The question should be will republikkkans of today (2010) repeat what happen in Rosewood, FL and Greenwood (Tulsa, OK) just on a larger scale throughout amerikkka?

    • John Dolan says:

David Westmoreland, Leave my country. You are part of the problem, ignorence. If you really study history and look at which party has done more harm to the black race. It is not Republicans. Every place has things in it’s past to be proud of and things to be remembered, so as not to be repeated. We are all Americans and if you are not on board with that, then get out. Go somewhere where you will be proud. The level of racism you are talking about is over.

  11. i want more information, and to know if, there any one still alive. My son who is 14 years of age, wants to know more and write a report on rosewood. he had and his friend had never heard about the events until i showed him it. He can’t belive that its apart of history. some please contact me, as soon as possible, thank you

  12. My name is Nathaniel jones III, would really like your help thank you.

  13. Rev Randall Barrett says:

Racism is a learned behavior and doctrine. Thank God my parents raised me to accept all people. My God loves all people and so do I. Also I wish they would stop calling it racism are we not all of the same race ? The Human race. If anything it’s intolerance for ethnicity. Yes it’s still alive and well but to be honest it runs rampant through all ethnic groups. Until we learn to see people as Children of God, and that God made us all and he’s fine with our colors and loves us all, it will never end. This is like a disease or virus thats created by ones environment. If Parents , Grandparents, Uncles etc… of all colors could just stop and think how miserable their children will grow up to be with all that hatred inside of them maybe we could finally be rid of it.. Life is hard enough, but living it with love for all people makes you feel like you have purpose in life. Hatred is like a cancer you’ll never be happy, or satisfied.

As far as the film I cried my eyes out. Anyone that cares about all people it hurts to see that. As far as all color of people before you complain please think about those people in Sudan, and Dar-for They are being slaughtered daily ( genocide ) I cant understand why the world turns a blind eye to that.

    • cherri says:

Its darfur (shakes head) lol im not being smart.. I agree

    • james says:

      Sir,
While in the most part I agree with your assessment, I feel that this hatred is not relegated solely to ethnicity. It is a fundamental human intolerance for anything that is different. I am from a white middle class family. Having said this, I found that this film broke my heart. I have trouble understanding the hatred and stupidity that this film shows people (and I use this word loosely in this case) are capable of. And I believe the world turns a blind eye to all the violence because ethnicity is evolving to a point that it no longer revolves around race, or color. It is about rich and poor. World governments are becoming subservient, not to their inhabitants, but to the multi-national corporations which seem to make all the rules these days. The idea of some sort of payoff to the descendants of these crimes is at best a childs dream. Who would pay the money. Taxpayers whose ancestors may or may not have had anything to do with the horrors committed. Who would the payments go to? What criteria? How far back in history would you like to go? I think a better bet is to take some of the money the government sends to the rest of the world, some of the expensive government lunches, limos, accounts, and other freebies and use that money to actually add to education in the portions of this country where it is deficient. But when a young teenager in this country is recruited into gangs at a young age where they can earn more in a day than I do in a pay period, where they are desensitized by early exposure to alcohol, drugs, and sex, and the few role models that do exist for these children get caught doing drugs, turning from teen stars to acting like whores onstage, etc… what hope to these kids have? The world is becoming more violent and divided, not less. Less tolerance, fewer opportunities, more violence. I apologize for rambling, but I don’t see the problems getting any smaller. Ethnic youths are still arrested more frequently and convicted more often for crimes. I don’t know what the solution is, but sending these youths to prisons to learn how to become better criminals isn’t it. Something must be done to give these children hope rather than hate.

I would like to have information to speak with any rosewood survivors or the relatives of the deceased regarding my family history.

  15. I just finished watching the movie Rosewood. I have watched it as often as I catch it on television. When I ask some, they have either not heard of it or they have heard of it but have not seen the movie. It still amazes me that this is a part of our history. Not only that, but it is only a fragment of what has really happened. I recently learned about an area in New Jersey that has a burial place for African-American soldiers who served in WWII. It was being used as a dump until someone brought it up. Keep telling the stories. There is so much to learn about our cities, our nation, our world. I can only learn and tell others and share information. Together we can make a difference. I too, would like to meet and listen at the feet of our elders who are telling the stories. Each life has a purpose and I have to still believe that I can help make a difference. Yes, we can!

Im so sick of black people whining.. yeah racism does exist … black people are racist against white people also. what do you think would happen if a white person went into an all black neighborhood? I can tell you what, I had a friend whose car broke down in a black neighborhood, he was beaten to death and set on fire. That wasn’t racism??? I’ve worked for eveything I have while most Black people expect a handout. Ive also seen firsthand what happens when black people start moving into a white neighborhood , The white people move out and the neighborhood turns into a ghetto. Look at Harvey Il for a perfect example!!get off your ass and get a job, get off welfare which my taxdollars pay for and quit blaming everyone else because of how bad you have it!!!

      • gail says:

        You’re so right!

Wow Katrina, that is so sad that you believe that every white person is like that! First of all I am white and I am married to a wonderful black man, our family is blessed that we all see beyond the color of skin, I believe that jesus was black always did and always will. Yes Katrina there is still whites that feel they are better but we all know this is not true, and there are blacks that feel this way too, and judging by your display of hate, I see you are one of them…Awful and hateful please get some help!

    • Get A Fucking Life says:

90% of these post show the existence of racism. It will never go anywhere; it’s a reality that we all will deal with black or white. As far as the Jews go, well they are white people too! Their issues deal with relegion; not race.

Not to mention this thread was about what happened in Rosewood; which has nothing to do with slavery.

Now u make me wonder y they attacked ur friend if he was anything like u.. if not then I pray he may rip.

Scoffs at ur retarded ass frame of mind.

    • Doreathea says:

Theresa. You have just made it to the top of my prayer list. Racism does exist on both sides.. I have had blacks treat me worse than whites but not to the extent that I have been treated by whites. Of course you would call it whining because I can safely bet that you have not been mistreated by the country you were born in. I work for everything I have as well.. I was in collage full time, worked part time and was rasing two young children on my own.. while my WHITE husband from who I was separated from did nothing to help me or our children.. At one point I worked 3 part time jobs because I couldn’t find one good one and it was my mother who helped me.. not my WHITE ex husband. I am making myself clear so far? There are lazy white folks in the world just as there are lazy black ones.. Trifling doesn’t know a color. You really need to stop watching tv , get out off your tail and see how the world is for other people. You may have been blessed to not have had to struggle but a lot of others haven’t had your priveledges. Try to learn a bit how the rest of the world is before you open your mouth and spew ignorance.
      Blessings

    • Natalie says:

Racism is everywhere, and while whites aren’t the only ones who are racist, it’s unfair to blame blacks for everything that they deal with. Think for a moment, (if you can) and try to realize that life is a vicious cycle. After the CIvil War, blacks were taken advantage of by the sharecropping system and because only 20 or % could read, this went on for a while. Imagine trying to get an education when your family needs you on the farm, and then you not being able to get a good job because you’re black and the same thing happening to your children, Yes, life has gotten better than that, but it takes a while for everyone to be on a level playing field, considering the huge head start that the whites were given.

  17. Joana Isabel says:

There’s still a lot of racism in The United States.

    • grey eyed girl says:

This slave trading republic, which is still an english colony was built on such. Foundations don’t change. Racist whites resent the fact that is is KNOWN THAT THIS NATION WAS BUILT ON THE BACKS OF AND AT THE EXPENSE OF SLAVERY. But of course they will die and go to hell before accepting the truth.

  18. Joana Isabel says:

There’s still a lot of racism in The United States. In spite of the years, hu
    man beings are cruel.

  19. K French says:

Okay I have seen the movie, read the article, and read all of the post to the article.

I have a few things to say now.

First off to the comment about racism being a learned behavior. My Grandpa was a member of the KKK, my Father’s famous quote when I was growing up was “I don’t hate nigars, everyone should own two or three of them.”

Now with that being said. One of my best friends in this world happens to be a black man. I would do anything I could for him if he needed it. He is also one of the nicest people I have had the privilege to meet in my 37 years.

Second, I am so sick to death of hearing everyone whining. A lot of black people whine because they feel entitled to compensation for what their ancestors went through. A lot of white people whine because they feel black people are getting special treatment.

The way I look at things is like this. We are all human. Black, White, Brown, Indian, Who really cares. If some treats me with respect, and is nice to me and my family, That is all I can ask for. It doesn’t matter what someone looks like for me to be nice to them. Long story short here, Live by the golden rule.

Treat others how you would like to be treated.

  21. eddie says:

give me a break about repairations please. NO ONE has ever suffered like the Jews. period. talk about slavery, we’re talking from bondage in Egypt ( who do you think bulit the pyramids ) to being blamed for the black plauge ( killing all Jews in southern Europe ) to Hitlers genocide 6,000,000 Jews dead. My whole family is dead. So please don’t make it seem like black folks need repairations because no Jews are getting it, nor are they crying about it. they go out and work and get on with life !!!

    • grey eyed girl says:

Jews have not suffered as others, 6million is nothing compared to 100 MILLION Africans who died during the slave trade and throughout. Yes Jews were blamed for the plague and LYNCHED, yet Jews out here in the world are very racist towards others, especially towards Blacks. Jews did and are still getting reparations. Hell, Blacks should be compensated for JIM CROW; which continues to this day. But then again you may not know what JIM CROW is. Blacks still get discriminated against in housing, employment and every damn thing else! Jews run this country and the entertainment industry. Not to mention how the U.S. ignores what Israel has done and continues to do against Palestine. Sadly the Palestinians and Jews are BROTHERS!

      • Fact Checker says:

Of course Rosewood was a tragedy that never should have happened. BTW, those hooded KKK villains were, at the time, all good DEMOCRATS!
100 Million slaves? Please do not believe the stupid made-up statistics about the African slave trade (slaves supplied by other black Africans btw). The US TOTAL population in 1780 was less than 3 million -of all colors. Nobody knows the slave numbers. And yes, even one is too many. No excuses. But my American ancestors lived worse off than their neighboring slaves. And just because I’m white, I should not have to pay for something my family FOUGHT and died to correct! (Where’s our reparations?)
NO, blacks are not discriminated against. It is illegal. Whites are keenly aware of this. You need to get over your “victim” mentality. Whitey is NOT out to get you. Okay, there are always some extremist jerks, but they are truly the exceptions.
Isn’t 1600 Penn. Ave. occupied by a black family? Or since he has no slave roots, it does not count?
When we begin to accept that our differences are due to culture, and NOT color, then maybe our children will grow up in a world in which they are not judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character (MLK).

ppl are evil and immoral and god created this wasteland for garbage of all races.

  23. RLH says:

While the holocaust is prob the single worse thing to happen on this planet, the numbers are so exaggerated. And they continue to grow. 6 million I feel is just not possible. That would be 1,666 Jews killed and disposed off a day, everyday nonstop for 10 years! Come on. When I first started to learn about it in school which was 30 years ago, I remember all the information being 2 million, and over a 30 year span we’re up to 6 million? They can’t decide. But I personally do believe the numbers are grossly exaggerated. I just don’t believe it’s possible that a day everyday nonstop for 10 years… My opinion.

    • Natalie says:

Well, in one camp they probably would not have been able to kill that many people. But in total, there were 15,000 camps operating during the years of 1939-1945. Granted, they weren’t all running at the same time for all 6 years, but that’s still enough to kill 6 million people, I think.

  24. Luke says:

I can’t believe the Jews are whining, really , really. The Jews think that they better than anybody. Look at what are they doing to the Palestinian. Even here in the states the Jews are the most racist people. H ow come Jews compare themselves to Black, The Black have been suffering the white man oppression and continue to suffer. Even they so called Latin think that they are better than Black……. the white man brainwash them stupid ignorant Latino. Give a damn break !! it’s sad that my ebony brother don’t realize how bad it’s. The whole fucking word is against us.

  25. Educated Black Man says:

It’s amazing how so many people don’t now their own country’s history and thus we are and continue to be plagued by ignorance. Eddie I am so sorry to hear that you’ve lost all of your family. Truly my heart goes out to you. My sadness, however; is that I really have no idea where or who my original family is due to slavery. You seem to have allot of hatred for blacks and that my friend is sad and is the exact element that plagues this world. Grey eyed girl is dead on and seems to know her history quite well. 100 MILLION , not to mention the middle passages to this country that claimed so many more than 6 million lives.

    • Fact Checker says:

Educated Black Man? You say “grey eyed girl” is dead on? Maybe dead wrong would be better.
100 million is the same kind of gross exaggeration as 6 million (although even one is still an atrocity).
But do the math. In 1790, the first US Census only counted less than 4 million TOTAL, including slaves. Historical estimates of 1800 put the black population of the entire African continent at less than 40 million.
The US did not even reach a population of over 100 million until the 1920 Census! (No slaves since 1865 btw.)
Remember figures don’t lie, but liars figure.
Be suspicious of ANY historical claim without reasonable authority.

      • tphillips130 says:

Fact Checker: The African slave trade started in the late 15th Century, when I’m quite sure there was not a census of the African continent or North America. Your figures are starting with the late 18th century. Also remember slaves were not counted as a full person. How do you know your figures are accurate?

  26. Martrica Hall says:

Being that Willie Hall was an ancestor of mine, just knowing my family was a part of this massacre has always hunted me but also make me charish my life more.

  27. Just a regular Red kneck from CA says:

When i grew up, we also heard the racist jokes. That was really it. I also heard cracker jokes. That was really it….
My point is that hate is a personal thing. Some have it & some don’t. I think the personal reasons of the past are different now. Usually steming from a personal feeling that life could be better & someone is to blame. Hitler got a huge following with that message. So did/does the KKK. 6 million Vrs 100 Million……Really, lets fight about whats worse. Both numbers make me want to weep when I picture my children totaling TWO!
GOLDEN RULE is great advice! How do you want to be treated? How simple is that?

  28. ken ketchum says:

White people would riot and burn African American’s homes down if they could get away with it.

I’m a white person who lives in a rural part of Pennsylvania, and I’ve seen a mob mentality among the cops, and also among people when someone of a different ethnicity get blamed for something.

The law now won’t put up with idiots running around taking the law into their own hands and breaking the law themselves in so doing.

That’s the only thing that keeps any of us safe from the idiots we are surrounded by, and that’s the new form of justice that is so sweeping and absolute for the most part, no one can have an entire town decide to form a mob, with the entire judicial//legal system’s members as part of that mob.

So now we see a greater sort of mob rule, which to wax political would now be another subject, etc,…

Humans are a virus for the most part, plain and simple.

  29. razor says:

Man has done wrong to one another for along time, but some have done things that should not be forgoten. what will it cost to fill the history books with the absolute truth. 30. razor says:

I had no idea that this massacre happened and i am speechless
the only thing i want to say is some of the crap is of our own doing, however for the most part these white people are so shrewd this has been the plan for many years. The drugs, jails,no jobs, felonies so we can not get jobs, and etc,….After all, we are desendents of slaves which means to have a life in the present well that is a joke.Yep, but that is ALL you will have nigga. I have got to read more.

  32. demetrius says:

  33. MisLynCat says:

I had to ask myself a question, why are We African American People so hated? What reason would All Races hate Us so much that people want to kill us in the manner in which they do. It just couldn’t be because of the Color of Our Skin. If you want to play game with me you can say it’s the way We act, And I will tell you that We were condition to our Masters, Some of Us still have that slave mental state of being. You can say because we are lazy because of the-vigilance committee
    (40) group formed to terrorize and control Negroes and their supporters before and during the Civil War
    scourge (scourging)
    (12) (verb) whip; punish severely; (noun) instrument for flogging; whip

  34. mike says:

i have also seen the movie rosewood.and yes it really is heart breaking because for one i am not a racist person.i have mixed race nieces and nephews.i also have alot of friends that are african american.i dont believe in torturing, raping and killing anyone.the people that did that kind of thing back in the day will for sure meet their maker.i dont wish that kind of cruelty on anyone.god bless america and god bless everyone.

  35. Meredith says:

Most of the above posts show that there is a lot of hate and a desire to allow that hate to persist far into the future. Reparations will only fuel that hate – that money has to come from many someones, many of them recent immigrants, who had NOTHING TO DO with the evils perpetrated 2 and more centuries ago!

Few will disagree that slavery is a shameful part of our history. I firmly believe that in a few centuries, historians will look at slavery as the root of the undoing of our country. Life is for the living. As much as possible we should be looking forward or else we allow the misery of past sins to persist in the future.

  36. ave. joe says:

The REAL facts about Rosewood (it was actually a black male MASSACRE against innocent white people) can be found here:

    http://hubpages.com/hub/The-Real-Truth-Of-The-Rosewood-Massacre-1923.

If one googles “Black Male Massacres” you see that blacks massacring white people is sickeningly common

SLAVERY: A far greater percent of free blacks owned slaves in America then free whites. In the city of New Orleans alone, almost 30%(!) of free blacks owned slaves! By contrast, less than .05 of Americans owned slaves in America in 1860.

  37. Katy says:

well i have to do a HUGE project over racism and i have looked EVERYWHERE for information, but i can’t find anything thats real great. All the stuff i find just repeats itself. Your article covered a great deal of the story. I am a rosewood descendent who received compensation for my grandparents propety in Rosewood. My grandmother, Sophie Goins Monroe and great grandfather Martin Goins are buried inthe Rosewood cemetery and his grave and marble headstone is still visible. I just want you to know that many of the survivors (who were deceased by the time of the compensation) remained in Florida and are buried here in Riviera Beach, FL (Palm Beach County), including Sylvester’s wife, Gertrude King Carrier Johnson. She died in 1952, though she never had kids of her own, she raised my aunt Marie, for whom I’m named after son. Aunt marie caught pneumonia in the swamp as they ran and she is buried in Chiefland, FL. Thank you for taking an interest in my family history. I try to keep the memory alive so that hisotry does not repeat itself. You in 1993, in Tampa, FL a black man visiting from New York was doused with gasoline and set on fire, just for being black.

    • Verlenseia Dukes-Taylor says:

Like you, I am a Rosewood descendant. I am just getting bits and pieces. My great grandmother was Emma Carrier. My only regret is that I am just now finding out, because I would have love to meet and learn from the survivors.
I don’t know how this blog went from Rosewood to slavery, because the residents of Rosewood were NOT slaves. They were tax-paying, property owning citizens. The money was not compensation for slavery. The money was awarded because as tax paying citizens the law should have protected them.
Racism is an issue that is best dealt with from within. We all need to stop pointing the finger! And judging from some of these comments, we all need to learn our history!
